We have officially started counting down the days before GoT is back on our screens and we can finally drool over Jon Snow for the millionth time. In the meantime, here are a few career lessons from GoT :
1. BE SOMEONE
It doesn’t matter if your company has 5 million people or just twenty, don’t just be that girl that you can’t even remember out of work. Sure, a boss like Jaqen H’ghar might want you to blend into the crowd and become “no-one” – and, y’know, kill a few people – but it’s important to always stay true to who you are and what you believe in.
2. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS.
Tyrion Lannister can talk himself out of almost any situation; his gift of the gab has saved him from death on numerous occasions. And this is because, for years, Tyrion has been marketing his best asset – his wit – to navigate his way across the Seven Kingdoms (albeit boozed). When it comes to work, make like Tyrion; identify what you’re good at and use it to your advantage.
3. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK.
Let’s talk about Varys: first, he was on Team Lannister during Joffrey’s (f*cking saddistic) reign and now he stands by Daenerys as she burns down boats in Meereen. Essentially, Varys is networking his way through the realm – and has some powerful friends to show for it. Networking is a key element of getting ahead in the workplace; just be sure to not get caught up in office politics, and never backstab like a Kingslayer.
4. GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING.
“A Lannister always pays his debts.” But do they really? Just ask Ser Bronn. Jaime Lannister promised him a bride and a castle in exchange for his sword-bearing services – and is yet to receive, well, anything. Note to self: whether it be the offer of a promotion, payrise or potential job prospect, always get that shiz in writing.
5. BACK YOURSELF.
Apparently, Jon Snow doesn’t know very much… but we care to disagree (soz about it, Ygritte). He knows the difference between right and wrong, and follows his heart, even in the face of adversity (AKA knife-wielding Brothers of the Knights’ Watch). Take on Jon’s bastard-bearing self-confidence and always trust your gut instinct.
6. DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE.
Even if your bitchy boss, tyrannical 21C or, let’s say for argument’s sake, a hell-raising High Septon on a power trip tells you to treat someone any less than you’d like to be treated, don’t do it. No job is worth losing your integrity for. Like, ever. Looking at you, Shame Nun.
7. RISE TO #GIRLBOSS SUPREMACY. YES. YOU. CAN.
Yes, we all know the Mother of Dragons is badass, but so are plenty of other female GoT characters – and each of these women are #girlbosses in their own right. Daenerys is freeing slaves, Sansa reclaimed her home and Lady Brienne is, well, just kicking ass left, right and centre in the name of nobility each episode. Three words: dream, believe, achieve.
