My period is the worst sometimes. From killer cramps, period belly, the fear of my pad being visible (hmm why are they so long sometimes?) and not to mention the acne that appears every month to remind me who is boss -my period can be a nightmare. Thankfully I can take comfort in food right!? Here are the foods you can eat on and around your period…
I am a ginger addict and I can actually chew it without giving myself a pep talk *yay right*. In a research study, 150 women were instructed to take 1 g of ginger powder per day, for the first 3 days of their period. Ginger managed to reduce pain as effectively as the drugs mefenamic acid (an anti-inflammatory painkiller) and ibuprofen. So why not sip on ginger tea and show Aunt Flo who is boss.
Shout out to all the meat lovers *waves frantically *. I love my meat y’all so when I discovered (not like a scientific breakthrough) that red meat is the richest dietary source of iron (woohoo) and since we all know that it’s so normal for women to be low on iron during that time of the month it’s time to reach out for meat. If you’re not a meat eater, feast on some spinach and beans.
3. Dark chocolate
Chocolate cravings are extremely common at this time of the month (and every other day LOL), but excessive sugar isn’t a great idea and may actually make your symptoms worse. Try eating dark chocolate- it’s lower in sugar and will still satisfy your sweet cravings, and as an added bonus is a rich source of magnesium
